Twelve-year Major League veteran Geoff Zahn was head coach of the University of Michigan baseball team for six seasons, through 2001. He is the seventh former Wolverine player to serve as head coach. In his last three tournament appearances, Geoff led U of M to the championship game all three times.
Zahn accepted the position at Michigan after spending the 1995 season as an assistant coach at Pepperdine, where the Waves were 36-19-1 and won the West Coast Conference championship with a 23-3-1 mark. Geoff earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 1997, leading the Wolverines to their first Big Ten title since 1987. He has led the Wolverines to the Big Ten playoffs in four of his seasons as head coach. The Wolverines won the Big Ten Conference Tournament title in 1999 to finish strong with a 34-30 record, and placed second in 2001. Michigan was 36-22 (.621) in 1997 and Zahn has the fastest start in Big Ten baseball wins in Michigan history. Zahn, who earned varsity letters at Michigan in 1966 and 1967, spent his 12 Major League seasons pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins and the California Angels. He was drafted four times before signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers in January, 1968. He spent six seasons in the Los Angeles minor league system before earning the Dodgers "Rookie-of-the-Year" in 1974. Zahn's career record in the Major Leagues was 111-109 with a 3.74 ERA. Geoff was 18-8 and considered the top left-handed pitcher in the American League in 1982 while leading the Angels to the division title. He was sixth in the Cy Young Award balloting. |
